Here’s a brief insight in to the processes and work involved in recovering a modern armchair. The example here is a late 20th Century Laura Ashley Cambridge armchair of mainly wood construction.

Once we had removed the original covers we are able to inspect the foam and advise the customer if any of the foam structure is crumbling, damaged or needs replacing. With this particular chair the foam remained intact and in acceptable condition for a recover, we were also able to establish that the foam met current fire regulations from labels still attached to the chair.

To enable us to cover this chair in the clients chosen fabric a barrier layer between the foam and the top fabric was required. This is not always necessary. The barrier cloth provides two things, a renewed fire retardant (FR) layer and the bonus of a light plumping up of the existing foam.

This is a fairly typical example of a modern upholstered chair requiring not much more than recovering in new fabric, however, the older the chair the more likely it is that any structural foam will have disintegrated with age and the whole lot require removing and replacing.

As with any project we undertake, each one will require its own unique approach and we will do our best to establish exactly what work needs to be carried out before providing a quote.
